ECOMED: the waste-to-energy project by Raco

Raco participated in the 15th edition of ECOMED, the Mediterranean Green Expo dedicated to environment, energy, sustainability, and the circular economy.

The 2023 edition took place in Misterbianco, Sicily, a region that has faced 175 extreme weather events over the last 12 years, more than one per month, more than any other Italian region. Therefore, there is an undeniable need for the entire country to discuss and consider how to transform the island into a 'green' region, especially in relation to waste management and ecological transition. Sicily is emerging as a potential pillar for clean energy in the national landscape, offering optimal climate conditions for photovoltaic and wind installations, ensuring high energy production. Furthermore, with already well-connected electricity and gas networks, it could become the energy hub of Italy and a gateway for Europe's energy.

In this context, Raco, a company of the Ludoil Group (part of the Luce sub-holding), which operates in Sicily, played a prominent role. With its dedicated space, the company presented the «Etna Project» a renewal plan aimed at transforming its organic waste management facility into a biomethane production facility. This initiative, based on chemical absorption technology, represents a crucial step in adopting circular economy principles by the Ludoil Group.

Fabio Ermolli, Environmental Director of the Ludoil Group and CEO of Raco, presented the Etna Project, which is set to start in August 2023, and participated in a roundtable, sharing his extensive experience and vision in waste management, reclamation, and sustainability. Among the guests at the Raco booth was Gilberto Pichetto, Minister of Environment and Energy Security.

"Italy must be central and a protagonist in new energy routes, starting from North Africa and the entire Mediterranean area. Sicily, due to its location, can play a fundamental role, especially in the development of renewable sources, in the government's strategy for energy security. This island is the place to develop a new economy, one of a future for which the rules are being written today".

The event also involved numerous school groups, with dedicated moments for education and environmental awareness. Particularly significant was Director Ermolli's presentation titled 'From Waste to Energy,' sensitizing young people to the importance of proper waste disposal to transform them into valuable resources like energy.
