Sodeco, the first ship-to-truck operation in Italy

Sodeco, a company within the Ludoil Group, successfully advances the bitumen discharge project using the ship-to-truck method.

At the port of Civitavecchia, Sodeco has completed the unloading of an additional quantity of 1500 tons of molten bitumen 70/100, using the ship-to-truck method.

The unloading operations were coordinated by the Port System Authority of the Central Northern Tyrrhenian Sea - Ports of Rome and Lazio (AdSP), under the guidance of President Pino Musolino. They also involved the collaboration of the Customs and Monopolies Agency, the Harbor Master's Office, the Prevention and Safety Service of Workplace Environments of the Local Health Authority, the provincial command of the Fire Brigade, and Cosepo - Fire Guards.

Ship-to-truck method

The ship-to-truck method allows for the unloading of bitumen from a bitumen tanker to a tanker truck through a system of pipelines and pumps for product transfer.

Once unloaded, the bitumen is ready for transport and use, eliminating the need for storage in depots. This approach reduces carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions associated with maintaining bitumen in tanks at temperatures exceeding 150°C.

This marks the first time in Italy that a bitumen unloading operation in ship-to-truck mode has taken place, demonstrating how the collaboration between public and private entities, as well as the adoption of innovative logistical methods, can reduce, if not entirely eliminate, part of the environmental footprint in the value chain.
