The Ludoil Group successfully managed the first shipment of Biojet SAF for Roma Airport and ITA Airways in Civitavecchia.
The bio component in the 3500 tons of SAF has resulted in a reduction of 50 tons of CO2 equivalent compared to an equivalent load of fossil origin. The supply, facilitated through Sodeco's logistics infrastructure in Civitavecchia, allowed ITA Airways to continue its decarbonization project for the Rome-Venice and Rome-Barcelona routes.
This represents a further acceleration of Aeroporti di Roma's efforts in sustainability and decarbonization within the aviation sector. Fiumicino Airport had already achieved the distinction of being the first airport in Europe to obtain the highest certification, Airport Carbon Accreditation 4+ Transition by ACI Europe, for CO2 reduction. It also confirmed its commitment to achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2030, well ahead of the original industry targets.
What are Sustainable Aviation Fuels?
SAFs are sustainable aviation fuels produced using a variety of feedstocks, including used cooking oils (UCO), animal fats, oils from crops grown on marginal lands, urban waste, and agri-food or agro-forestry residues.
They can be blended with jet A-1 fuel, as their chemical and physical properties are nearly identical to traditional fuels, allowing their use without significant modifications to aircraft or engines. International production standards allow SAFs to be blended with traditional fuels up to 50% without substantial changes to aircraft turbines.
Sodeco, Infrastructure, and Strategic Role
Sodeco has an integrated logistical system with coastal depots and pipelines for the reception, storage, and distribution of finished products of categories A and C, in accordance with the tax warehousing regime. Among the various products it manages, the depots can store aviation fuels destined for Fiumicino Airport via a pipeline.
The pipeline connecting Sodeco's depots to Fiumicino extends over a distance of 63 kilometers and is the primary of the two pipelines supplying the airport.
